With below freezing temperatures in the winter, the risk of pipes bursting increases. But with some simple planning the risk can be decreased.
1. Unhook any garden hoses from outside spigots
2. Look in the attic and see if any plumbing is exposed. It is common for unfinished attic space to be plumbed for a future bathroom which needs to be assessed closely
3. Look in the crawlspace and see if any pipes are exposed like the one in the picture. Insulate the pipes using batt insulation or with foam insulation made to pipe's diameter
During freezing temperatures it is important to open the cabinet doors to the sinks and keep a trickle of water running on both the hot and cold side of the faucet, if able.
With some careful planning you can decrease the risk for having a unwanted water damage and frozen pipes in the winter
