3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Be sure you monitor your candles while they burn, and that you trim the wicks after each use to reduce residual soot.

Some of the most popular home decor items are candles. The calming flicker of light, the soft crackle of fire, the many scents you can select from to waft through your home... but did you know candle burning can leave soot on your walls, ceilings, furniture and belongings? It happens when black smoke billows from the wick either while lighting it, burning it, or when extinguishing it.

SERVPRO of Franklin, Vance and Granville Counties has cleaned up soot in several homes from candle soot. SERVPRO always recommends burning the candles only while someone is at home and staying in the same room while it burns. Many homeowners overlook this easy and simple step. Candles can leave a fragrant scent in your home, but you don't want residual soot.

Make sure you clip the wick after each use so you can enjoy the candles without the soot. Call SERVPRO at 252-433-0005 if you start to see dark areas on your ceiling, walls, or while you dust. The soot particle is very small and can travel throughout your home via you HVAC air ducts. Be wise and give us a call! We're always here to help!
